Heart health researchers from Loma Linda University in California, and New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico, have confirmed that when pecans are part of the daily diet, levels of &#8220;bad&#8221; cholesterol in the blood drop. Pecans get their cholesterol-lowering ability from both the type of fat they contain and the presence of beta-sitosterol, a natural cholesterol-lowering compound. Eating 1 ½ ounces of pecans a day, about 30 pecan halves, as part of a heart-healthy diet, can reduce the risk of heart disease.</p><p>The same natural compound that gives pecans their cholesterol-lowering power has also been shown to be effective in treating the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland in men. About two ounces of pecans provides a dose of beta-sitosterol found to be effective.</p><p>In addition, a recent laboratory study from Purdue University found that gamma-tocopherol, the type of vitamin E found in pecans, has the ability to kill prostate cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone. The researchers now want to test this and other types of vitamin E in animals.</p><p>Contrary to the widely held, but mistaken belief that &#8220;nuts are fattening,&#8221; several population studies found that as nut consumption increased, body fat actually decreased and clinical studies have confirmed that conclusion, finding that eating nuts actually correlated with lower weights. One study from The Harvard School of Public Health discovered that people following a weight-loss diet that contained 35% of calories from fat, including pecans as a fat source, were able to keep weight off longer than people following a traditionally recommended lower fat diet. With their super nutrition profile and low-carb content, pecans also make a perfect choice for people following low-carb weight-loss plans.</p><p>Pecans and other nuts count as meat servings in the Food Pyramid. That&#8217;s because pecans are high in protein and other important nutrients. When the craving comes for a large helping of Stouffer&#8217;s lasagna, dice, slice and steam fresh zucchini, carrots and onions and toss it with olive oil, a little whole wheat pasta, and marinara sauce for a light, low calorie, high carbohydrate, comfort fix.</p><p>Develop a plan to enjoy these foods in small portions, combined with increased activity (suggest an after-dinner group walk perhaps), space out high-indulgence foods over two to three days with leftovers or &#8220;doggie bags,&#8221; or prepare side dishes with a few recipe substitutions to serve at home or bring as a guest.</p><p>If you are overweight, you can be sure that you have eaten more food than your body needs in terms of calories. Chances are you&#8217;ve done that both through your choices of food &#8211; high in fat and sugar &#8211; which bulks up your body without filling you up and also through eating larger portion sizes than you really need of everything.</p><p>Catalog your calories. Carry a small notebook with you all day and write down everything that you eat and drink, including water. Every weight loss program is based around basic elements: exercise, diet, calorie counting, point systems, etc. You have to get the right combination of elements to work for you!</p><p>Finding the right combination or recipe of weight loss elements can be difficult. Some might say the perfect weight loss diet recipe is elusive.</p><p>But if you know what aspects to consider it makes pinpointing what will work easier. First decide how much you need to lose and write it down so you can&#8217;t vacillate later. Keep your weight loss goal realistic. If you pick an unrealistic goal you&#8217;re just setting yourself up for failure.  </p><p> </p><p

Many people who try to lose weight find that diet is the easiest thing to change. However despite finding the eating part easy, they struggle with the exercise part. This can be fairly understandable when we live in a world of rush rush rush and stress. Who has time to squeeze in a session when they have spent all day rushing about at work?</p><p>Well exercise doesn&#8217;t have to be difficult and you don&#8217;t necessarily have to make a designated slot for it. You can take a different dance class every week until you find something fun as well making it more interesting for you. Going for long walks at the weekend with family is also a good way to tackle the exercise issue. Some people use a pedometer and make a target for steps during the day. This means they fit in walking throughout the day, which makes exercise seem less of a chore too.</p><p>The easiest way to make exercise or movement an aspect of your everyday life is to start slow. You could start with doing something specific once a week and then twice a week and increase until you get to everyday or 3 or 4 days depending on what you want to achieve. If you incorporate slowly it won&#8217;t put as much pressure on you to keep it going and you will make it a lifestyle change very easily. For the first month do something once a week and keep to it. Many people even struggle with this, but once a week really is quite easy to do in comparison to 3 times a week. Then once you are enjoying the once a week for a month, add another day where you slot some movement in.</p><p>The most important thing about exercise though is that you enjoy it. There is no point doing it if you can&#8217;t stand to do it, it should be enjoyable. Diet and exercise aren&#8217;t the only things that contribute to health. Stress, happiness, getting enough sleep, sunshine and fulfillment all include in the health factor. So whatever you do enjoy yourself &#8211; that is what life is all about.</p><ul
